Chapter 14 - Vito

She’s drunk. I know it. She downed three glasses of Lambrusco in less than ten minutes. I know she isn’t thinking clearly, and if I’m honest, neither am I. She has completely thrown me off and I am incapable of rational thought when she is this close to me. Looking into her eyes, both of us are trying to catch our breath after that kiss.

It’s useless because I can’t, I can’t breathe. Now I have tasted her I am not interested in cooking dinner. I just want more of Elodie. She doesn’t move, or try push me away, she just looks up at me.

“Don’t stop,” she whispers on a soft breath. I don’t want to stop. I want her — so damn much. But if I don’t stop, this is going to go places we both know it can’t. If I don’t stop now, I am not sure I will be able to stop before it goes too far. It has already gone too far.

“We have to stop Elodie,” I say, kissing her sweet lips one last time. “You know we can’t do this.” As much as I want her, we can’t. Forcing myself, against every molecule in me that’s pulling towards her, I step away.

“What is wrong with you?” she cries, upset.

“There’s nothing wrong with me. You know we can’t do this. My father will kill me, hell your father will too.” I point out the obvious, they won’t care that she was drunk. None of the reasons matter, we are not meant for one another, and I am not allowed to touch her.

“What’s wrong with me, Vito?” Elodie, hisses out the words and fills her glass again. With a shaky hand. “Do I turn you off, are you not into me?” She’s angry now. “Because I don’t get it. One minute you’re into me and the next you act like a five-year-old boy afraid of catching cooties. What the fuck?” She shakes her head and turns her back on me. “No one is going to know what we do here, why can’t we at least just enjoy being locked up together?” I want to hear what she is saying, so badly. To just give into this — this thing between us. I don’t know what to call it, but I am attracted to her like no other woman before.

“And then?” Because it’s all fair and well, but what happens after this? We just forget and pretend? I know I won’t be able to do it. If I saw a man lay a hand on her after I’ve had her, I’d kill him.

I’d kill him and I would enjoy doing it.

She’s different, and I’m not sure I could be with her and then let her go.

“Then what Elodie?” I push, I want her to tell me how that works. If she could just walk away from me afterwards. I don’t think she could. Elodie isn’t looking for money, or power, she has those. She wants emotions, love and all those things no one in our business actually believe in.
